A large sea serpent with a horse-like head has been spotted multiple times over the years, which locals have nicknamed "Colossal Claude."
In Depth:
Sightings of this creature began in 1934, when crew members on the Columbia River lightship spotted a 40-foot creature with a horse-like head, barnacled ridges and a long tail swimming in the waters at the mouth of the Columbia River near Astoria. They reportedly watched the creature for hours through binoculars.
Other sightings were reported over the years, mostly by fishermen near the mouth to the Columbia River. Sightings of Claude supposedly ceased some time in the mid-1950s.
However, in 1963 the Shell Oil Company had sent an oil-drilling expedition off the Oregon Coast. Crew of the expedition supposedly filmed a creature very similar to the description of Colossal Claude swimming in nearly 180 feet of water.
