A half-elephant, half-snake monster that somehow survived from the beginning of time, known locally as the Grootslang.

In Depth:

Hiding somewhere in the jungles and caves located around the Orange River between South Africa and Namibia, there supposedly resides a giant snake-like creature with the features of an elephant. This semi-aquatic creature can range from 20 to 50 feet in length, and is incredibly strong and intelligent. Known as the Grootslang (or Grote Slang)

Stories of the creature start at the literal beginning of time (making it primordial), where the Grootslang hid from the gods to keep itself from being split into more... sensible creatures like snakes and elephants.

It supposedly hid in a cave that was full of diamonds known as the 'Wonder Hole', and would viciously guard the location from intruders. While the Grootslang's legend is deeply rooted in South African creation mythology, that doesn't stop people from trying to hunt down the creature in hopes of finding its treasure. Numerous explorers have disappeared in the area trying to find the Wonder Hole, which only fuels the idea that it might actually exist.

On top of that, sightings of the Grootslang - or at least a similar creature - have been reported in the area for decades. The last noteworthy sighting was in 1964 near the Vaal Dam, which sparked greater interest in looking for the creature at the time.

Its fame has garnered its inclusion in pop culture, including appearances in TV shows, books, video games.
