According to local folklore, the whooper could be a small fairy-like creature or pixie, described as being an old man with red hair and wearing green clothing made of moss and grass. The whooper would hide in the thick fog and 'whoop' when a storm was coming in hopes of keeping fishermen from going out on the water.
