Thought to have originated from German folklore, the kobold can be a help or a hindrance depending on how you treat it.

In Depth:

Kobolds are fae creatures of the mischievous variety, usually associated with one of three different places: houses, mines, or sea-going vessels. They are typically remain unseen, usually by shapeshifting into various non-human creatures or inanimate objects, or by using their strange powers to become invisible.

Most kobolds have an interesting dynamic with people in that they love the company of humans, and crave acknowledgement, but are extremely shy and will do anything and everything to keep from being seen. This is most evident in household-dwelling kobolds: these like to help out where they can, fixing things and doing general chores for the people it 'haunts.' For instance, they will do things like sweeping the floor or dusting, or even bake bread during the night. They also like to find misplaced important items and return them to places where they can easily be found, or even bring gifts such as food or gold... if you don't mind it actually belonging to your neighbors.

Cave-dwelling kobolds are similar with their helpfulness in that they will knock on the walls of the mines in order to help miners find good veins of ore, or to warn miners of danger. Meanwhile seafaring kobolds will help organize your cargo holds or perform other general tasks about the ship, all while remaining invisible to the eye.

Why they remain invisible varies depending on the source; some say it is because their true appearance is dangerous to humans, or that seeing one could be an omen of impending doom. Others claim it is just because they are deathly shy, and just don't like the direct attention. However, they do like being acknowledged for doing their work, and it is usually a good idea to do so if you think you have one in your home. Otherwise, if you ignore them or insult them, they can become extremely cheeky. Just know that harmful pranks are not beneath a scorned kobold, so if you come home to find that some of the chores around the house have been done, thank the kobold and move on.
