A giant box trap built in the woods meant to trap one of the most famous cryptids of the modern age.
In Depth:
Sightings of large human-like footprints spurred the construction of a box-like trap in the middle of the woods. Dubbed the "Bigfoot Trap," the construction was made with the specific goal of capturing a live sasquatch. It is the only such trap that was ever built in North America.
The large footprints that set things in motion were supposedly found by a local minor named Perry Lovell, who lived along the Applegate River. He claimed that he came across the footprints in his garden, which were 18-inches across with a six-foot stride.
Perry's story was apparently convincing enough that it attracted the attention of Eugene-based North American Wildlife Research Team (or NAWRT), who sent members out into the forest to construct a trap and catch the creature. They built a ten-foot by ten-foot box made of wood using 12-inch wide and 2-inch thick planks and anchored it to the ground using telephone poles. They fitted it with a metal grate to act as the door, which would swing shut should anything mess with the bait hanging at the back of the box.
The idea was once a bigfoot became trapped inside, a member of the NAWRT team would tranquilize the creature and fit it with a tracker tag. NAWRT maintained the box and the bait for 6 years, catching a couple of bears but not much else. In 1980 the U.S. Forest Service bolted the door permanently open, sighting concerns about visitor safety. NAWRT eventually closed down after that, but the trap remains.
