The Wolf Creek Inn has been home to a number of different ghost stories over the years, including a stage coach driver and a famous American author.
In Depth:
The Wolf Creek Inn was originally constructed in the 1850s as a place for travelers to stop as they made their way over the Applegate trail. It went through several transformations over the years, eventually becoming a first class hotel and was a popular stop along the Oregon Stage Coach line between San Francisco and Portland. Over the years, Wolf Creek Inn had many famous guests, including President Rutherford B. Hayes and Sinclair Lewis.
One guest had a particular fondness for the Inn, having stayed there an entire summer. This guest was none other than the famous American writer and adventurer Jack London, who was staying at the Inn while he finished his novel Valley of the Moon. Supposedly he enjoyed his stay so much that his ghost has been seen wondering the Inn ever since his death in 1916. The room he stayed in has been kept as it would have been during his stay, which might be one of the reasons his spirit has remained.
Another spirit that supposedly haunts the grounds of Wolf Creek Inn is known as Charlie Parkhurst, who was a stagecoach driver during the 1800s. Charlie had lost one eye due to being kicked in the face by a horse, earning the nickname of "One-Eyed Charley" or "Cockeyed Charley." Charlie was an interesting driver, rumored to only miss work on the day after payday because of the hangover from drinking away the paycheck. Charlie was also into politics, and registered to vote in 1868 to vote for Ulysses S. Grant. Charlie died in 1879, with a cause of death listed as Rheumatism and cancer of the tongue, probably from chewing tobacco. However, during the autopsy it was discovered that Charlie was, in fact, a woman, and that her name was actually Charlotte, an orphan who ran away at the age of 12 and assumed a male persona. She is considered by some to be the first American woman to have voted in an election. Supposedly, her spirit can sometimes make an appearance in the lobby of the Wolf Creek Inn, either as an apparition or through disembodied voices and EVP.
Other apparitions are said to appear here, including that of a young girl and black masses. Activity includes footsteps, knocking, voices and singing, cold spots, and being touched. It is also said that sometimes the piano in the parlor plays itself, and the furniture is sometimes found to rearrange itself at night.
