The Ascot House is home to a ghost that people claim to be of a young woman named Maggie Hume, who was a servant that committed suicide at the residence.
In Depth:
Constructed in the 1870s for Frederick Hurrell Holberton, the Ascot House was originally simply known as 'Tor' before the property was sold to William Beit. Beit was an avid fan of horse racing, which was thought to be the reason he renamed it the 'Ascot House'.
Being fairly well off, Beit had several servants taking care of the grounds and the house, including a young woman named Maggie Hume. In 1891 Maggie was found dead, having committed suicide using strychnine. An inquiry by police into the matter found that she had recently learned that she was pregnant after several of the male servants admitted to having more than friendly relations with her. Being an unwed mother, Maggie was buried on the property in an unmarked grave and forgotten.
Since that time there have been numerous rumors of a ghost being seen wandering the house, along with other strange activity such as people feeling as though they had been touched, the sound of footsteps when no one is around, and an unusual cold spots along the walls.
