According to legend, Jan Tregeagle was a lawyer to was in league with the Devil himself, known for committing numerous acts of evil. Supposedly he was able to testify in court cases even after he had died.

In Depth:

Jan Tregeagle was magistrate and lawyer in Cornwall in the 1600s, who was greatly disliked in life and had a number of horrible stories about his character and things he had done. According to legend, he supposedly murdered his wife, cheating an orphan of his inheritance, and even sold his soul to the devil for wealth and power.

The story goes that towards the end of his life he began to become worried about the afterlife, and tried to escape eternal judgment by giving money on the church in hopes it would save him. The priests and clergy saw this as an opportunity to save a soul, and agreed to help him by performing prayers and exorcisms in order to keep the Devil at bay. He eventually died, he was buried in St. Breock Church as additional protection against the forces of Hell from taking Tregeagle.

A short time after Tregeagle's death, a farmer was taken to trial for not paying his rent to Lord Robartes, whom Jan Tregeagle had worked for and was in charge of keeping the records of payment. When the farmer swore that he had paid Tregeagle, he proclaimed that Tregeagle himself should come and testify on is behalf. When Tregeagle's spirit suddenly appeared and did so, saying that the farmer had paid his rent and he had simply forgotten to mark the books.

However, Tregeagle refused to leave after that, still wanting to escape his awaiting punishment in Hell. That didn't dissuade the Devil from trying to claim his prize: at night demons and hell-hounds would wander about Cornwall looking for Tregeagle's soul, and Tregeagle screamed and cried as he ran from them.

Eventually, it was decided that giving Tregeagle various tasks would prevent Satan from claiming him, and as long as he worked Tregeagle would be safe until Judgment Day.
