This island in a canal in Mexico City has drawn the attention for it being adorned with numerous dolls, but also reports of supernatural activity.
In Depth:
This island was decorated with hundreds of dolls in various conditions by Don Julián Santana Barrera. According to local legend, Barrera came across the body of a young girl in the waters of the canal and was distraught. The next day he found a doll in the same water, and hung the doll in the trees in her memory and possibly ward off evil spirits. Barrera then found more dolls, and started adding them to the tress as well. Over time, the whole island became adorned with dolls and doll parts, giving off a highly creepy vibe.
Then on April 17, 2001, Barrera was visited by his nephew on the island, and went fishing along the shore. According to his nephew, Anastasio Santana Velasco, Barrera told him that he heard a siren singing to him. Stepping away for a few minutes, Velasco came back to find Barrera face down in the water, supposedly in the same spot that he had found the young girl back in the 1940s.
Since that time, the island has been a hot spot for tourists interested in the strange island, and in addition to the creepy, decaying dolls can encounter strange, haunting paranormal activity.
Reported Activity:
- Dolls moving on their own accord (arms and legs, eyes)
