This lake is said to drown even the strongest and most skillful of swimmers, and that human body parts can sometimes be found floating on its surface from time to time.
In Depth:
Lacul Vinderel is a glacial lake in northern Romania in the Maramures Mountains. It is fed by snow melt and rainwater, making it extremely cold, and is on a nature preserve meant to protect rare plant species. It's high elevation, remote location and limited access make it perfect for local legends to spring up.
Some of the more benign stories about the lake is that it is supposedly bottomless,or that on St. Elijah's Day young women could walk into the lake and wash in its waters while whispering magical spells in order to get married to a good husband. It is also said that you shouldn't ever throw a rock into the lake as it will result in a terrible storm. While strange, these stories are exactly where any good vibes about this particular lake come to a screeching halt.
Supposedly, a dragon resides within the waters that has a taste for human flesh, and once ate all of the guests at a wedding ceremony that was held on the shore of the lake. Even if there is not a dragon living here, it is said that occasionally human body parts have been found floating in its waters. There are also dozens of rumors of people having drowned in the lake, including strong and skilled swimmers, and that their death is somehow a sacrifice necessary to appease the lake itself.
