The Lupatia went down with all hands on deck in a thick fog between the Tillamook Rock Light and the shore, but has been seen during foul weather here ever since.
In Depth:
In 1881 during the construction of the Tillamook Rock Light a sailing ship named the Lupatia got stuck in a thick fog bank near shoreline. Workers on the lighthouse heard the panicked sailors and tried to use lanterns to signal the ship from the highest point of the tower in order to let them known where to go.
It appeared that the ship was able to correct its course at first, but the next day the bodies of all 16 of the Lupatia's crew washed up onshore. There was one survivor of the wreck though, and that was the crew's dog.
Ever since that day, locals in Cannon Beach have witnessed a ship sailing through the waters between Ecola State Park and the Lighthouse on foggy and stormy days.
