Objects seen in the sky over post-World War II Europe has people wondering if the Russians were testing rockets or if we were being visited by extraterrestrials.
In Depth:
Shortly after the end of World War II reports of strange objects streaking across the sky began pouring in from all over the country of Sweden. This would be the start of one of the most well-documented cases of UFO activity the world has ever seen, with over 2000 reports in Sweden alone over less than a one-year-long period of time. About 10% of those reports were backed up by radar. These sightings became known as the "Ghost Rockets."
Investigations into the Ghost Rockets case have been pretty much ongoing since they began, with a number of countries being involved including the United States, Greece, Belgium and Italy.
Some people theorize that these sightings were some sort of Russian experiments with captured Nazi rocket technology, or perhaps just meteor showers. This became the primary theory surrounding these reports, despite some of the reports stating that the objects were capable of quickly changing trajectory and speed, and the Russians denying that they even had access to any Nazi rocket technology. The fact that no meteors or parts of Russian rockets were ever found, and documents declassified in 1997 concluded that the rockets were "some previously unknown or unidentified technology, possibly from outside the earth" have cemented this as one of the most compelling examples of UFO sightings in modern history.
