This bridge has become a known for a number of strange events for over 70 years, including a large number of dogs leaping to their deaths
from the bridge.
In Depth:
When the Overtoun Bridge was completed in June of 1895, no one could have suspected that it would become one of the most infamous bridges in modern history. Constructed as a faster means of reaching the Overtoun House from across a deep ravine, the bridge is beautifully set against the forest foliage.
The pretty setting in which the bridge resides contrasts its history of death, starting some time in the 1950s when it became known as the "Dog Suicide Bridge" or "Bridge of Death." Dogs were reportedly jumping over the stone walls of the bridge, plummeting 50 feet down onto the rocks below. This usually results in the animal dying, either immediately from the impact or shortly after from the trauma.
Many try to explain that the dogs must be smelling some sort of small or strongly scented animal down in the ravine, especially as minks, and become excited enough to give chase. And - according to this theory - because of the way the bridge is set in the forest and trees can be seen nearby, the dogs simply jump over the stone wall expecting there to be ground on the other side, only to fall to their deaths.
Others claim that the bridge has some sort of strange spiritual quality or haunting that the dogs are sensitive to, and that is to blame for them wanting to leap from the edge.
