The ghost of the captain of a whaling ship washes up on the Oregon coast looking for a place to rest.

In Depth:

According to legend Captain Evan MacClure was once the captain of the whaling ship Moncton, who had a reputation as a womanizer, a jerk, and liked getting into fights. Needless to say he was not well liked, especially by his first mate Bill Brewster.

The story goes that Bill Brewster was betrothed to a woman named Lehui Opakhini, who worked as a call girl in Hawaii. While the Moncton was in port in Hawaii, Brewster was visiting a saloon with his fiance when MacClure decided he wanted to use Lehui's services. Brewster and MacClure got into a fight, with MacClure coming out on top. MacClure pulled a Mike Tyson and bit off Brewster's ear, pinning it to the wall of the saloon with a knife.

Brewster was not one to let that sort of thing slide. Sometime during December of 1873 he led a mutiny, himself and the crew rushing into MacClure's cabin armed with blubber hooks and pistols. They placed their captain into a lifeboat and set him adrift in middle of the Pacific Ocean, hoping that they would never see him again.

Unfortunately for MacClure, he drifted through the waters for days, getting so malnourished and dehydrated that he didn't even bother standing up when his boat started being slammed by a violent storm. Sometime in January of 1874 the boat drifted onto the rocks around a place known as Devil's Punchbowl. Witnesses of the event described skeleton of a man stood and stepped out of the boat onto the rocks, and but almost immediately slammed by a giant wave and washed back out to sea. His body was never recovered.

But that wasn't the last that was heard of Captain MacClure. Ghostly happenings began happening all up an down the coast, including apparitions of a skeletal figure appearing inside of bars and houses, doors and windows rattling and opening by themselves, strange lights and sudden warm and cold spots, and inexplicable moaning happening up and down the coast during the proceeding spring and summer months. In one instance, the ghostly figure appeared to a woman inside her home, where he told her that he was "looking for a place to stay, and for someone to join him in death."

Then, suddenly, in October of that year, the manifestations of MacClure's ghost suddenly stopped. Around that time the Yaquina Bay Light was closed down and the family that had occupied the light moved on. It is claimed that MacClure's spirit found the lighthouse empty and moved on in, and is now simply waiting for someone to join him in the hereafter.
