In Depth:

Some time in the 1870s a boat appeared off the coast near Newport, Oregon. It had been led off course by some foul weather, and were in need of replenishing their water supplies. The captain of the ship had a teenaged daughter by the name of Muriel Trevenard (some sources say her name was Zina), whom the Captain had decided to temporally leave at Newport's hotel while he completed his voyage.

Muriel was an adventurous sort and met a group of young people from outside of the area who were on holiday, joining in their various adventures up and down the coast. On day in August they decided to go explore the nearby Yaquina Bay Light, which had been empty for some time. The group dragged Muriel along, acquiring the key from the hotel manager, and wandered up the hill towards the light.

They went in through the front door, going inside and exploring the house top to bottom. During this time they found a strange looking crawlspace in the third floor landing just below the light, which led back a ways before seemingly dropping off into a downward shaft. Having a strange feeling about this shaft the kids decided to leave, exiting through the front door. It was then they noticed that a thick fog had rolled in from the sea, making it an excellent time to return back to town.

While the majority of the group headed back down the hill, Muriel realized that in the process of exploring the house she had managed to drop her handkerchief, and asked one of the boys to let her back inside. The boy, a young man by the name of Harold Welch, opened the door back up for her and offered to come with her, but Muriel refused, saying that she would simply exit through the kitchen door and rejoin them shortly. Harold reluctantly agreed, and made his way back down the hill to catch up with the group.

When Harold reached his friends they asked where Muriel had gone, and he explained about the Handkerchief. It was then that one of the other boys mentioned that the lock in the kitchen had a key broken off in the lock and that she wouldn't be able to get out that way.

He had barely gotten the words out of his mouth when they all heard a blood-curdling scream followed by desperate cries for help. The group ran back up the hill, and Harold tried to unlock the front door. The lock seemed not want to let them in, and after fighting with it for what seemed like minutes the group made it inside. The group burst inside the house, and upon investigating the second floor found a pool of blood with a trail leading up the stairs towards the landing with the strange closet.

They followed the trail up the circular stairs, finding that the crawlspace they found earlier sealed shut and just below that was Muriel's handkerchief. The group struggled to try to force the crawlspace back open, thinking that maybe Muriel had been shut inside somehow, but were unable to do so.

The group then rushed back to town to get help. Upon returning the search of the area found no trace of Muriel aside from the blood and handkerchief. Eventually the search for Muriel was called off, and Harold Welch, the boy that had let Muriel back inside the lighthouse, kept the handkerchief in his possession until he died.

While that might be the end of the story, it is said that sometimes people visiting the lighthouse can sometimes come across a young woman in a period dress - or at least her spirit - before she vanishes without a trace... just like Muriel did once before.
