A large, hairy creature of Alutiiq legend which supposedly had a hand in causing people to flee the now abandoned ghost town of Portlock.

In Depth:

The story of the Nantiinaq was first relayed by the Alutiiq people who lived in the area to members of the British Royal Navy as they traveled along the Alaskan coastline in the late 1780s. At the time the sailors thought nothing much of the local legend.

The creature is described as a large ape-like creature, similar to descriptions of Bigfoot or Sasquatch. It is described as having similar descriptions and behavior reported in Bigfoot encounters as well, from throwing large rocks, strong smells, and extreme feelings of terror. Local legend also gives the creature supernatural qualities as well, insinuating that it is not actually a creature but a spirit of the land.

It is also described as being extremely territorial, and according to some stories was the result of the abandonment of the town of Portlock in the 1950s. This version of events is disputed by some historians, stating that Portlock was abandoned due to economic decline.

The Nantiinaq in Media:

  • Alaskan Killer Bigfoot, a reality TV series about a group of people traveling Portlock, Alaska centered around the legend of Nantiiaq. First aired on Discovery+ on December 7, 2021.
