Florida student murders couple and eats a man's face, claiming that he was being chased by demons and thinking he had become some sort of non-human being.

In Depth:

On the evening of August 15, 2016, a 19-year-old college student by the name of Austin Harrouff had joined his family for dinner at sports bar and restaurant. While waiting at the restaurant Austin started acting strange, stating things like he had super powers and was immortal, but then got agitated and left the restaurant, presumably because of slow service. His parents, whom were worried about Austin's behavior, called police.

He was later found four miles away in the garage of Michelle Mishcon and John Stevens, hunched over their bodies and eating John's face in what appeared to be a completely random murder. A passerby tried to get Austin off of them, but was severely injured when Austin fought back as though he were some sort of animal. Police soon arrived and tried to subdue the young man. They tried tasing him but it had no effect, and he was abnormally strong when officers tried to pry him off of his victim.

When police were finally able to take him into custody, Harrouff claimed that he didn't feel well and that he 'ate something bad.' He ended up going to the hospital due to something affecting his intestines. Toxicology reports indicated that he wasn't on drugs at the time, though it was possible he had consumed bath salts or some other illicit drugs that wouldn't show up. Turns out that he also had drank a number of different chemicals while inside the Stevens' garage, which put him in a serious condition for a while.

Police described the scene as monstrous, with each victim stabbed multiple times. Harrouff had used a pocket knife and a bottle opener to stab his victims, before trying to eat Stevens' face.

Harrouff remained in custody for years while an investigation was performed, mental health evaluations were made and a trial was conducted. During that time Austin claimed many different things happened before and during the attack, including that angels and God were talking to him, that a demon named Daniel was chasing after him, and that he was turned into a dog... all changing depending on who he was speaking to at the time. This all came coming to a head in November of 2022 when his trial ended, and was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Austin is to remain in a mental institution without the possibility of release, much to the dismay of the family and friends of his victims.
