According to the story, an unassuming black game named Polybius was brought into an arcade sometime in 1981, and several players who played it became sick. Others reported seeing strange hallucinations or became paranoid for a while after, feeling as though they were being watched. Other witnesses reported that government agents supposedly monitored the activity around the cabinet, taking down the initials of high scoring players. Then, after a few short weeks, Polybius disappeared.

Those who follow this story theorize that this cabinet was supposed to be some sort of government mind control device, which was being tested on unsuspecting players.

However, many people believe that the story was based on several other stories that were happening at the time, combining reports of players getting sick and dying after playing arcade games for long periods of time and the fact that the US government was cracking down on illegal gambling using arcade machines at the time.
